Guitar strings, Steel or Nylon?

Postby Dragneil on Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:22 pm

so ive bin getting into guitar playing alot lately, i currently have Nylon strings, but was wondering, what is best for newbies?

i play pretty much everyday practicing trying to get better, and my fingers hurt everyday:D but im a man and i will take the pain like a man^^

whats your opinion?
what is the best string to have if your a newbie?
i prefer rock songs and i belive steel strings would be better to have for thoose kinds of songs, but like i said, im a newbie with very sore fingers.

so the question is, should i get Steel strings? or keep my nylon strings?
let me know what you think:)
I made a police call once, I reported my colleague for being a pedophile. yes, it turned out in trials and everything, he lost custody of his children, his wife left him, but he was completely innocent, so kent if you are reading this now, let me just say that, think twice before you take my stapler next time

Definately steel. Your fingers will hurt at first, but stick with it, they soon harden up and you will have callouses soon. By going with nylon you are just putting this off. Also go with a low gauge string which is lighter on the fingers

pretty sure it depends on guitar and what sound you want. nylon is for classical guitar, which i believe your Ibanez is. putting steel strings on it would be like eating soup with a fork. i'm not sure it's even possible tbh due to the bridge setup.

if you like rock invest in an electric guitar!

oh and practice, practice, practice! :D

as per what gonzo says, your guitars a classical guitar, and is made for nylon strings, so if you want steel strings it's going to be a new guitar im afraid, no real rush mind you if your just learning :)

I don't really play much, but I remember having a classical guitar and it put me off learning. Best to use one with as small a distance between the frets and the strings as possible imo . I got a semi acoustic and found that easier, but it probably is more to do with the actual guitar than the type. You might be able to adjust it..top hit after googling "action classical guitar":

http://www.hillguitar.com/website/news/ ... setup.html

If it has got decent action already then you just need to get used to it.

only problem i have with my guitar is that my thumb hurts after playing and that its not steel strings:P,
of course this all depends on which song i play, for example: Collin Hay - Overkill, is the most pain in my thumb:P
while other songs such as Offspring - Dirty Magic doesnt even bother my thumb, my guess is that Overkill requires more thumb pressure on the back then other songs^^ but its just endure the pain

Left hand thumb or right hand?
Im guessing if you say pressure on back its left?
Try changing your hand position to relieve pressure. Move your wrist around a bit.

If you wanted to get into classical I would still probably say start steel to learn everything then probably move.

And if you are playing things like Offspring save for an electric! :D

I have 2 Ibanez now, but the metal guitar kinds. :D So if you like the feel of the ibanez, there is rock/metal ibanez out there

When you say the thumb do you mean the muscle where the thumb joins the hand? Learn some songs with power chords (bridging with your forefinger) and you should find normal chords end up easier after a while

im puzzled to how you can get a sore thumb :o you shouldn't be putting pressure on your thumb if it's just resting on the neck of the guitar
