MAXIMUM SIG SIZES - IMPORTANT

Postby EasyTiger on Fri Jun 02, 2006 12:00 pm

As taken from a discussion in the mod section we have put a restriction on sig sizes because we too frequently see ones which take up most of the browser window for people on lower resolution screens.

A vote was done on the forum recently and 2/3 of people are on 1024x768 resolution screens and lower and so to accomodate these people we have decided on the following MAXIMUM sig size:

500px (wide) x 200px (tall)

A sig should also not exceed the following physical size for obvious (bandwidth) reasons:

300kb

We expect people to adhere to these sizes without having to be told by moderators - don't spoil the priviledge for everyone else by trying to push it.

Well that's the end of animated sigs then. I agree with the physical size but not the file size. It's nigh on impossible to have a well animated sig under 300kb.

I would propose a limit of 1.5mb. It's really not that big and everybody has broadband. I've never noticed any problems viewing the forums even with zeems mega gifts and I really enjoy seeing the efforts of those who take the time to make them.

It doesn't stop you reading the posts waiting for sigs to download as the text is there instantly and once the sig has dl'd then it's in your cache and you don't have to dl it again.

I would ask you to reconsider the file size and perhaps have an open vote for all who use the forums.

Brig: There used to be a website but it doesn't appear to be running anymore - where you could upload all the sigs you wanted to use and it created that script for you in the form of a jpg for forums. Was pretty funkytastic - Keir and I used it for a while. Shame its not there anymore :/

All you need is a php hosting free website (t35.com worked for me) and a script :)

Doesn't seem to work if you try and tag it up on ukcs tho :P

:|

Just curious but if theres a page with 20 replys from 20 different people each with an animated signature of 1.5MB

Then thats 30mb when you view it , on my connection (220kbs down , sucky I know :P) it would take

MY MATHS COULD BE FAULTY , I SUCK

30mb = 30,000 kbs / 220

136 seconds to load the images , 2 minutes 16 seconds to download the images assuming all the images it needs to retrieve are on _fast_ servers and my browsers uses _ALL_ of my available connection.

Imagine if your browsers only uses 50% of your BW then its 272 seconds , 4 minutes and 32 seconds

To me thats just far too long , especially seeing as I'd have to do it every day I visit that thread because my cache gets deleted when I close my browser :)

No thats not right m8.

If you download an image, that re-appears in the same page, then it opens that same file. Meaning, that if there was 5 posts by the same dude, with a sig size of 1.5mb, it would only take up 1.5mb.

Not everyone knows how to make animated stuf etc. so don't expect to have everyone 1+ mb signatures. Oh and forums are actually made to talk, not to show off fancy images, unless you're really desperate to look at the images instead of reading a post.

Is it only bort who is allowed to make big sigs or does the 1.5mb rule go for everyone.

1.5mb applies to anyone who wants an ANIMATED sig. If you're making a still sig then only 300kb please.

Also your computer should cache the images anyway, so you'll only have to load em up once in a while, 1.5 megs is more than reasonable

tbh its about time.

alot of people were kinda taking the piss with the sizes they were using.

imo 500x200 is still WAY too big. the main concern should be about the height not the width. popular limits are 500x100 or 400x150.

just a suggestion to further streamline while people are making the transition.
