Another image from earlier, a running theme with the animal heads. This is a prize winning chicken at my local county show :) and the beagle was a New Forest hunt's beagle.

Good initiative!

The beagle one was really good tbh. And Xeno, not bad man! (EDIT: I think all the tiger head needs is to be the same yellow as the wasp and you're spot on)

I have this from ages ago in the UKCS uploader files, made a sig for KarateKermit I think?

It looks terrible :D

and this was purely made for the lols, a spray I made way back, for someone on the forums:

Looks much better man :)

Next you could use something like the Burn tool to try and add some shadows. The burn tool has 3 modes I think, midtones/highlights/shadows, play around with those. This is just one tool, there are many other tools to tinker around with.

I always forget about the burn tool  I just tend to use adjustment layers with layer masks.

Wiki, do you use layer masks when you delete parts of your images? If not it's probably the better way of doing it, very non-destructive and if you want to get some of the original image back you can.

I never took the time to learn layer masks, I just copy each layer I'm working on in case I need to go back :D Perhaps not the best way to do things!

So if you could pull of the burn tool effect in the way that Slavechild suggested, with adjustment layers as masks, that would probably be a good way to do it :)

I am self taught in Photoshop, so I don't know which way is best.

Tell me about it.. I draw geometrical shapes and anything with straight lines, but when it comes to people and animals I have no clue how to get it right.

I've been getting very much into photography since i've been at uni, and recently did a shoot which aimed to copy old film posters and to do so we had to do quite a fair bit of photoshop. I'm so glad i learned photoshop when i was younger (and on this very forum) otherwise I'd be at a massive disadvantage to those who have done photography-related degrees. Here are the posters:

these were all shot with a white background in a studio, with the backgrounds shopped in.
