forest/countryside type maps, any?

Postby zandorius on Wed Aug 11, 2010 11:07 am

No offence to anyone but 90% of tf2 maps tend to use the same buildings textures etc and im surprised ive not seen more varied theming.

Is this due to preferences of players and modders?

Id love to see some sort of forest levels or maybe something countryside themed, windmills barns etc

or maybe i should learn the tools and start a map like this myself :)

I agree, a forest map would be great, I think there aren't much models to make such maps tho, so people take the easy way and use the models there are already. Just a guess.

I think it's easier to model forests in tf2 then any other game, lots of the textures look 2d, flat panels attached to each other :P

there was a map we gave an early alpha test to which was pl_jungle.

not entirely sure what happened to that map... just seemed to disappear.

As said above the problem with making a new map type is the sever lack of props and textures.

plus a map can only contain a certain number of props, alias im sure will correct me but i think its 256. not enough for a realistic jungle or forest.

hmm might be easier to create a level based around a few giant trees think catwalks and ropebridges amongst the tree tops. both bases would be in tree tops at opposite ends of the map.

Create the illusion of endless forest with a good use of distance textures/skybox...

Yup that would work, some shrubbery.. wait a second...that asks for a picture..

so, yeh some shrubbery on the edges of the map so it's sealed and then a skybox with a forest texture on it behind that one :)
