TF2 Crafting: How many items for a hat?

Am I the only one getting this or am I completely wrong. YOU DO NOT GET BLUEPRINTS THEY ARE ALREADY THERE!
When you craft something and it's a success, the blueprint is noted and remembered for future use! All the possible combinations are already written down here http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/Crafting

yes you do already have blueprints BUT,
you can also experiment with random stuff to make new blueprints
for example:
has anyone tried doing 1 refined metal+a hat? maybe youl get a hat
its all about trial and error,plus if you do craft a hat while trying something new,be carfeull,you may end up lossing it

I have no metals so far...and I only find items the odd time D:

I turned all dupes into metal. I now have 2 level 3 metals, and a couple of level 2s. I also made a secondary token, and a pyro class token, just to test blueprints. I'll make a random hat when I can, I only got 1 on drop, and it was sniper (so quite happy to keep it)

Managed to craft my FIRST piece of refined metal...2 More to go and then I got a random hat, and if I don't like that one, I can combine it with my crappy Hatless sniper to have one more chance of getting a new random hat

81 items => Texas Ten Gallon (nay! already have it)
so Texas Ten Gallon + Mining Light (3 engi hats at this stage for my least played class) => Batter's Helmet (FFS, screw this i'm doing it again)
Other Texas Ten Gallon + Batter's Helmet => Medic Mirror! The class I main in 6v6, so epically pleased.

decided to craft my bald engi hat (which i got from 2 bald scout hats --> a batters helmet, then batters helmet and a bald engi hat) with my sniper hat - ended up with another rubberless glove pyro hat

lesson here - don't craft 2 hats together

I already crafted my first hat. Scotsman's Stove Pipe. At least it wasn't one of those "Hatless" hats. Already have 1 refined metal and 1 scrap. Soon another one...

I'm 1 piece of reclaimed metal (3 scrap metals) off a hat. i've crafted all my useless weapons so i dont have bonk, a sandman, jarate etc. a flaregun, some kgbs and something else and im in hat land.

come on the idling! i've justified this because i dont pay the electricity bill and my room is cold, so my pc will heat it up.

soooo after saying the mirror hat for medic sucks, i crafted my metal a few days ago and got....

as i rarely play engineer, i did my texas ten gallon with the mirror and got ... the hatless sniper

earlier today i got the hatless engineer which together with my hatless sniper, i now have the tyrant's helm

after idling all night i've got 3 refined metal. I decided that every hat that i have found so far is terrible. so i'd risk it and craft them, cos i must get a hat that i want this time... right?

anyway, i didnt. i got the scouts batters helmet. however, i then crafted this with my texas 10 gallon (a good hat but i dont play engineer) and i got the demomans fro'. i finally got a hat that i want

so i've found 3 hats, crafted one, but only have two left because of all of the crafting
