Too much effort TBH. People will be going after them thinking they might become another Earbud but for that and the free nature of Linux I see them becoming the next Ellis hat. I may keep one when I start picking them up for a refined in a few months time.

I'm installing Steam on my Ubuntu ThinkPad at the moment. Not sure if TF2 will actually run though.

In fact, I'm not even sure Steam will install - it currently tells me it has to be online to update; despite the fact it just downloaded an update from the Internet... Also had to install xterm.

Edit: Now it's complaining that I'm missing a load of 32-bit libraries (not that surprising, since I am running 64-bit Ubuntu), and thinks I'm low on disk space (there are gigabytes of free space).

Edit: That said, it does seem to have started up, and be working. I've managed to log in to Steam and am installing TF2. (This "live update" thing is fun, isn't it? ;))

Do you think I can get it if I just run Ubuntu on a virtual machine???

Thoughts on a postcard please.

So near, but yet so far. Got TF2 installed, but then got an error "Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glGetError'! Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated." Suppose I can try the latter...

Can anyone recommend a good virtual machine application?

EDIT

People seem to recommend Virtual Box... I think I can remember using that software and it was pretty good.

I used to VirtualBox when it was Sun. I feel dirty about using Oracle VirtualBox. =) But it works well, and I prefer it to VMWare.

Hyper-V if you're running windows 8 (or server), it's built in. Otherwise I use virtualbox.

There are a few guides on the Steam TF2 forums.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/f ... y.php?f=80

Will you get it by logging in via. text mode? It should allow people to bypass graphics driver problems etc.

This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

Got this error too with VMware 9 as it doesn't pick up my graphics card. I'm gonna try VirtualBox next.

edit:// It still works. TF2 doesn't load, but you get the item.

Shame my original laptop hard drive with Ubuntu on it died a few weeks back. Was a real pain installing Ubuntu via wubi on my main machine last night, and then installing Steam itself and trying to get the game to eventually run. I get the feeling Valve rushed into this launch without perfecting the download and installer considering the hassles with 64-bit systems.

Anyway, three of my accounts have the penguin now, I'll need to get it on the other six soon.
