Payload server map rotation

Postby pissed on Thu Mar 06, 2014 1:23 pm

Hello all,

I have a bone to pick with the payload server. It seems to me that the map choices are very limited. Especially after 10 PM, all votes look similar.

1. Badwater
2. Goldrush
3. Frontier
4. Barnblitz
5. Upward

etc.. You get my point. After a point, we seem to be playing these maps back to back. And there are always people complaining about why goldrush is next, well it's because we played the other 4 maps very recently.

We get to vote for other maps from time to time, but these usually seem to pop up earlier than 10 PM, and when they do, they all come together. Like there would be a vote where you have to pick between 3 or 4 really good maps that never gets played. You pick one, thinking "Next vote, I'll pick that other one", but when next vote comes, it's all badwater / goldrush / frontier again...

We have really cool payload maps like hodoo, 5curve, borneo, swiftwater, promotion, metropolis (I know the love / hate relationship with this, but still), boundary; and some other maps that rarely gets played like pier, manngrove, blastoff, floodgates, pharaoh, crosscut. But after a point in the night, we are stuck playing the stock maps over and over.

What I would like to see is:

1) More map choices in the voting
2) A little mix and match. A vote where the choices are "badwater / swiftwater / upward / manngrove / hodoo", rather than all stock or all custom maps.

Any thoughts?

I'll try to look into this tomorrow night, this shouldn't be happening.

I've noticed that the votes are usually either all good maps (upward, badwater, barnblitz), all bad maps (frontier, goldrush, pipeline) or all rare maps (metropolis, borneo, curve). I rarely see a mix of those three types.

My opinion does not tally with your assessment.

I know, all opinions are subjective, but you get my point, it's the same 3 maps every vote.

We've not forgotten, I am talking to Binerexis about this at the moment. Expect a resolution within a week.

As Apache says, we're fiddling with things which should fix this issue. I'll announce the changes when they're made and keep this thread open for feedback on those changes.

Thank you. I haven't been able to play the server since I posted the first message. Tonight I played and kept track of the map votes. Don't know if this would be any help to you, but it sure shows the problem:

I started playing around 10:45 PM

Map being played: Pipeline
Vote choices: Nightfall / Goldrush / Frontier

Map being played: Goldrush
Vote choices: Barnblitz / Upward / Badwater

Map being played: Barnblitz
Vote choices: Nightfall / Pipeline / Frontier

Map being played: Frontier
Vote choices: Goldrush / Upward / Badwater

Map being played: Goldrush
Vote choices: Nightfall / Upward / Badwater

Map being played: Badwater
Vote choices: Frontier / Nightfall / Upward

Map being played: Upward
Vote choices: Nightfall / Pipeline / Barnblitz

Next map: Nightfall

Also, while trying to take a screenshot for the vote choices, I somehow accidentally captured this awesome moment :)

Super goldrush on #8 is amazing and thanks to whoever puts that on. I think some new test maps would be cool, assuming you havent had one recently, with remade old maps or new maps that look promising. Could send out a message on the servers and ask them to vote for it here. "Which new map would you like to see on #8?" Because as pissed says, its the same maps in rotation and I think people vote more out of habit and other maps not being appealing then them just wanting to play these ones. Definitely feel like server #8 could need some touch to it to keep it exciting.^

Edit: Oh, and I like the pl_promotion map, shame it doesn't get on more often

Hi guys,

I have extended the times of our custom maps, so they should be available in the voting system into the early hours.

It's probably fair to give you guys some more idea about how maptesting works in TF2, other games at UKCS may have a different way of doing things.

When we get new maps in, we make sure they don't crash things and then try and put them into an organised maptest. If they don't bomb out of that then they go into a pot of available maps which we test on an ad-hoc basis. Just because people liked it in one maptest may not be the case if it went straight onto rotation! This is 'ad-hoc' testing is known by us as Phase II testing.

Maptesting falls to some of the more senior admins, so it is not always possible for new maps to be tested unless one of the appropriate admins is around. We will look into getting some more admins able to test maps soon, which means you should be able to pester more admins to try new maps.

Whilst we have a pool of maps we test before putting them into rotation we do need you guys to suggest maps on the forums that you wanted to see tested out. Some of them just aren't suitable for rotation, but the ones that have been tested enough so that you guys are happy with it on the server can go into the normal rotation so they can be voted on.

The whole system works on map ratings, so keep rating the maps. Yes, I know pop ups are a pain in the ass, but this is the easiest/fairest way to do it.

I hope this guys gives you some insight into how and why we do stuff. Of course, feedback is always appreciated.

Just an update from me, Supreme Dear Leader of The Republic of Maptesting, there are wheels in motion for a large maptest soon. Just putting the finishing touches on artwork and advertising so it should be all ready to go soon. Watch this space!

I agree with Epi, Goldrush and Pipeline are boring, unless one team is stacked.

I had couple of chances to play at the server these few days, and you can really tell the difference. We now play much different maps even late in the night. Sometimes you still get "all common maps / all uncommon maps" pattern, but the uncommon maps pop much more frequently.

So a big "thank you"!

:D
