January 23, 2009 - Left 4 Dead Update Released

Updates to Left 4 Dead have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Left 4 Dead

Fixed an exploit with melee where swapping weapons ignored the intended delay between swings.
In Versus mode, the Tanks' health now reflects the damage he takes from burning.
Fixed an exploit related to the "joinclass" command

------
NOTE: Servers need to be updated too, however the quick match and connect to game in progress is still allowing you to connect to unpatched servers this results in a crash to desktop.
So for now you need to create your own games/join lobbies.

From what I've read on the Steam forums, setting a tank on fire now causes DOT damage as opposed to the kill switch.

Fire alone will now take 1 minute and 15 seconds to kill tank.

...

That's right people, we now have to shoot the thing.

yup, pre-update

tank alight will die in 30 seconds no matter the HP

with the new update the tank will lose HP from fire, approx 75 seconds to drain 6000hp, this means survivors need to shoot the tank if they want it to die sooner.

You could let the tank die, just by setting it alight? 0.o

yea you could roast it in 30 seconds. so it was set it on fire and then peg it in different directions. then it would only ever kill one of you.

now its a bit more of a challenge.

the one thing I really want them to fix/add is some kinda timer between melees. only a second or 2 but its getting annoying for a hunter when they are all camped in a corner meleeing away. makes hordes from boomers useless, makes smokers tounges useless and hunters pointless.

so biased towards survivors atm its unreal ..

Theres definetly something wrong with the melee system , its too effective... sometimes I am tempted to shout ' Its a gun you morons , not a bloody club ' at the survivors

Its cheap as hell when they scuttle into a closet at the cresendo events and just spam the alt fire key till the elevator doors open... sure they have to get to the elevator, but the majority of the event is easily dismissed. I cant even avoid doing the tactic myself, I just become Hunter bait and vote kicked out the game and complaining about it nets me some ' qq moar, l2p , noob ' comments.
Personally I tend to melee to push the horde back and then shoot them, or melee to rescue teammates... but just spamming it is a real yawnfest.

However, if they added in a "charger" infected class, then the melee would be far less effective, and make openings for the other classes...

Quick update on the latest news:

"Valve has just issued a press release saying that a new game mode called "Survival" will be released this Spring along with Dead Air and Death Toll for Versus mode and the SDK.

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced a series of content and development releases for its latest title, 2008's best-selling new game property for the PC and Xbox 360, Left 4 Dead (L4D).

The first L4D DLC - dubbed the L4D Survival Pack -- is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game is also heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.

"Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what's included on the day of launch," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we've learned that we're no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we're extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences."

Left 4 Dead is a survival action game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 25 industry awards from outlets around the world.

No details yet on Survival mode."

It's the first mention i've heard of the new survival mode but I suspect that may be what's been taking them so much time, seeing as the update was supposed to be announced before christmas.

Quite possibly its just holding out against endless levels of infected, and teams win on time/level. As the level increases possibly infected numbers increase, infected damage increases, special infected spawn times reduced, more than 1 tank spawning, lots of things.
Equally I could be way off base :D

tbh, that seems the most likely scenario for a mode labelled 'survival'. Just have to wait until valve says more on it.

No new campaigns? :(

Oh well. At least the SDK is coming out too :D I knew it was going to be free, Valve wouldn't risk charging for the PC as they know people could just get hold of it for free. And good job to them for getting it free on 360. Poor Microsoft. They're gonna have to cut some jobs if they want their bonuses.
TC- you sir, are one pain in the ass!
Imp- you've been offline for a while and you dont have a life. i am confused.
Kan- War is annoying to play against I will agree, but he isn't cheating.
