Dual booting

Postby John Doe on Sat Jul 28, 2007 12:52 am

I have a laptop with vista home premium preinstalled on it and im sick and tired of 70% of my games not being able to run on vista so im considering dual booting with XP,i have 2 hard drives so im sure i can put it on 1 of them all i need is someone to simplify the steps of getting a legit XP doohickey and how to install it so its idiot proof(could be a big task especially when its me on the other end  )

any help will be greatly appriciated :)

http://apcmag.com/5023/dual_booting_xp_with_vista is this any use?

you can ignore the bit about partiyioning as you have two disks already.

also http://www.syschat.com/how-dual-boot-wi ... ml?garpg=3

from this step should see you right. remember to back up any important stuff before you begin, just in case!

LD you beat my link by a minute lol

which operating system is installed at the moment? is it vista?

if so, follow this one http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vista- ... -1946.html

it tells you what to do if you are starting with vista and are adding xp :)

ok, your setup is going to be a bit more complicated as i missed the "laptop" part. you wont have two hard drives but only a single hard drive partitioned into two. one will be for the backup files needed to restore your laptop in the event of an ubercrash, and in the absense of a vista cd. its your laptop makers doing it "on the cheap" and saving those extra few pennies it would cost to give you a cd copy of the operating system that you own.

you will need to ring whoever sold you the laptop and ask them to send you a copy of the operating system cd, which you can expect to pay anything up to £20 for. annoying i know, you've already bought the thing, but hey thats how low laptop manufacturers are stooping these days. its one of the reasons i went to linux on my laptop, i refuse to pay for the same thing twice.

as for an xp disc, they still come at a price. ebuyer is listing it as around £83 http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114053

is it a hewlett packard laptop?
