The server is based on Quakenet, and is called #uk-cstrike.
For those that are familiar with IRC that is the only information you will need, but if anyone is new to it then I have a
pre-scripted guide here from Chow
An introduction to mIRC
mIRC is an irc CLIENT. Don't see it as irc itself. It's a client, that connects to irc, just like internet explorer and firefox and netscape CONNECT to websites. There ARE other clients for getting onto irc, but this is the one I use, so this is the only one I can really step you through. It makes it MUCH easier if I teach you all on mIRC, you can move to other clients later on if you so wish. IRC itself is just a collection of chat channels. Each irc server is a seperate entity, we will be using QuakeNet as its the big gaming one, and most league rules REQUIRE clans to have a channel on quakenet, so a lot of UKCSers will already be on there. There are no "channels" premade in irc, if you join any particular channel name you either join the channel of that name, or if noone has made it, you "make" that channel. A channel only exists as long as there are people in it, however there are automated bots provided by QuakeNet that will stay in the channel while noone else is in there, and they don't leave unless its been inactive for weeks. I myself leave irc running, like msn, 24/7 anyway, so we won't have any problems.
The guide - installing and setting up mIRC
ANY questions or problems, just come into msn and ASK ME. I can walk you through all these things step by step, and answer any
1. Installing and registering mIRC
Go to: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Get mIRC version 6.16 from whichever server you like, and install it.
2. Setting up the options
Click Tools and then Options in the bar at the top to bring up the main options menu for mIRC. Click on the (+) sign next to
Connect in the sidebar to the left to open out that tree of options. Now in each of the following menus (open each one by clicking on the appropriate name in the white box on the left) do the following:
Connect: add a name (any name, your CS name will do), your email address, a nickname and an alternate nickname. Remember, try and take something that won't have been taken. For example [DeMent]Cobra won't be used, whereas Cobra might be.
Servers: (the option below Connect, click the (+) button to see it if you cant see it) - Select the irc network "QuakeNet: Random UK server".
Now, this is IMPORTANT, press OK on the options window to close it. DO NOT HIT THE CROSS SIGN. The changes to the options only save if you press OK.
3. Connecting to irc and joining a channel
Now you should have a big blank screen. Click the lightningbolt symbol to start to connect to irc. It should connect, and you should get a load of writing appear. If you don't see that, but you see a box marked "Quakenet" appear towards te top left of the screen, click on it to make it the active window.
A small window will appear called "mIRC Favourites". At the top bar enter the channel name "#uk-cstrike" and click join.
In the bar at the bottom of the First large white window, type in the command:
This will join you to the channel called "UK-CStrike", which I'm setting up for us. If you join a channel, and in the channel list on the right you see "ChowRiit" congratialations! You successfully got into irc! Now, you can talk, but at the moment I'm mostly just idling, ie leaving irc on even when I'm not there. Try poking me in msn, see if anything happens. Once we get all of the admins using irc, things will improve.
I'll provide a link to the QuakeNet website, so you can read-up on it a bit yourself, if you feel so enclined:
4. AUTHing with Quakenet
Ok, can everyone please now follow the following to register their nicks with quakenet:
This gives you a "logon", it DOESNT save your nick, but it DOES provide a logon, an AUTH account, that only you access. Then I can give your auth account specific privilages, for example, I can set the channel to automatically recognise you and give you "operator" status, the irc equivilent of admin (if you're a mod/admin).
Once you have this setup, please open up the Options menu (via the Tools dropdown), and within the Connect section, go to the subsection also called "Options" and click on "Perform". Make sure "Enable perform on connect" is ticked, and then paste the following into the white box:
- Code: Select all
/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH authnamehere passwordhere
/mode $me +x
Don't forget to change it to include your auth-nick and your password.
Now, whenever you connect, irc will AUTOMATICALLY auth you, and will also join you to the ukcs channel, and set you as mode "+x". This will simply hide your i.p. address from other users on quakenet, it's just a general safety thing.
If you want to learn more about irc, feel free to have a look at:
The site has a short guide, plus can direct you to a number of other guides.
So come and join in and chat with others from the forum, and even TC when he makes the occassional appearence
If anyone has any queries/issues, then don't hesistate to contact a mod or admin for help
Edit by Chow: Had a quick fiddle with the guide, it's only a rough guide, and it was written for DeMent initially and editted so there may be a few bits that dont make any sense. Problems, let me know.
