Faster Source Frame Rates - up to 50% faster ! (*4/1/2007*)

Postby TC on Sat Jun 18, 2005 10:15 pm

Below are some simple settings which can massively improve your source FPS without noticeably removing any quality (eg, 1% quality change for 40% performance improvement). Dont TALK about it unless you've even tried it.

First, test your starting FPS using the in game video performance test inside source. Write down the score.

Now do these things:

1. Set your autoexec.cfg to the following (Counter-Strike Source/cstrike/cfg/autoexec.cfg). Save an a copy of anything you had before in case you need it.

mat_bumpmap 0
mat_clipz 0
mat_specular 0
mp_decals 300
r_decal_cullsize 1
r_lod -5
r_propsmaxdist 1000
r_sse 0
r_mmx 0
r_3dnow 1
cl_crosshairscale 1600
cl_smooth to 1
fps_max 500

2. Either change your desktop shortcut icon for SOURCE or do "Play games" then right click and choose "Properties" then choose "Launch Options". Add to the launch line "-dxlevel 81". This instructs the game to use DirectX 8.1 which was much faster than ever 9 with no noticeable difference to Source graphics. Note, once you run the game with this once, to change it back if you wish, you MUST specify -dxlevel 9 to restore it. As it saves the settings and needs it explicitly set back.

UPDATED: See gandolfone post here to see how to set the directx level without it changing res or switching to directx9. This became necessary after game update on 23/9/5:
viewtopic.php?t=8767&start=3

Now run the FPS test again and see the difference.

*Note: Updated 4/1/7 to remove fog/rain changes as these are now blocked from being changed by the game.

--------------

Please do not change the topic of this post a million "mates mate" type stories to confuse people. Just let people try these settings and notice the difference in FPS and in game smoothness.

If you don't have an autoexec.cfg then create one with those variables.

TRY the settings before you comment irrespective of whether you have AMD or pentium - don't just look at them and make comments.

Remember to restart Source to try the settings and don't make typos or you wont see any difference!

FCUK you sure you did the -dxlevel 81 AND ran the game that way.

Its interest how it helps some people. I did a test with several machines and every one got a percentage increase of 40% and those machines varied from a 3Ghz machine to my own FX55 based machine. I now get 225 FPS in the test.

Nice work TC

Depending on the map, I can run from 30fps to 130 fps, and this is on a shitty laptop :P

Sorry, there was a typo in the original post!!!!

its -dxlevel 81 (not dxdiag)

If you already made the other changes, but not this, then YOU MUST try this too. Retest with this setting as well and compare against your original fps score in the test.
